Two Thirds of Secondary School Students Use AI To Do Their School Work

Two-thirds of students who use AI say they are getting better grades and results as a result.

This new survey by RM Technology has found that two-thirds of secondary school students in the UK use AI to do their school work. It found that 67% of students have used chatbots such as ChatGPT to write essays or do other work for them.

The most common uses for AI were to solve maths problems (42%), write English essays (41%), and translate something into a foreign language (25%). Other uses included writing poems (24%), helping with physics work (20%), coming up with essay topics for history (18%), creating pieces of art (18%), and taking science tests (18%).

The survey also found that two-thirds of students (68%) who use AI say they are getting better grades and results as a result.

However, the survey also found that four in ten students (38%) feel guilty about using AI. One in six students (16%) have submitted AI-generated work, only to be questioned by a teacher on its legitimacy.

A third of students (36%) say that even though they use AI to complete tasks, they are worried they are missing an opportunity to learn. In contrast, one in five students (17%) believe they are learning more with AI because they are operating a new tool in addition to completing school lessons.
