Sustainability, Carbon Neutral, Environmentally Friendly, Carbon Footprint, Biodiversity…...just some of the phrases we have come to hear on a daily basis, especially during COP26.
Of course, we are all aware we need to reduce carbon emissions to reduce global warming, but what can schools really do to contribute towards this?
In the Playground
Many schools do an amazing job of planting trees and nurturing gardens, even in Cities where space is at a premium. Children love to see the results of growing plants and vegetables and are extremely resourceful when it comes to home-made planters! I’ve seen ‘many an old Wellington boot’ blooming with marigolds on a school fence! And bins carefully segregating their discarded wrappings.
Thankfully, recycling is as natural to our children now as riding a bike, whereas back in the 1970’s it was all about educating children to pick up their litter, and recycling was taking back empty lemonade bottles to the local shop, to receive a 5p payment!
But what about inside the school?
Many are opting to go paperless or use as little paper as possible and with the introduction of tablets and smart boards into classrooms, this is becoming more achievable. Notwithstanding the cost of photocopying !
