This can be done as a class. The pupils workcollaboratively and independently. Apart from their own collection sheet in role, Ihave included alternatives. The pupils will need these notes for later activities. Ifthere are five pupils in a group, then one needs to take on the role of group directorto ensure that all roles are undertaken conscientiously. The group role cards (sheet2b) need to be cut out and folded in half so the cards stand like place names.The roles are:SUMMARISER – Think beyond what actually happens in the text. Identifythe three most important events / details. Why are they important? Are theyconnected in any way?QUESTIONER – Pose at least three questions which look in depth at thetext. They speculate and generate questions based on the information they have and the comments of others. A time capsule has been discovered in a wood in Britain. It had been deeply buried and was clearly very old.It contained a mixture of drawings and objects. There were also some scraps of writing. Photographs of these have been included so that you can see what they look like. The originals have been carefully preserved in a London Museum.On the lid of the time capsule was a message. It reads:This box contains the strange story ofHere the writing ends as the name has faded over time.Time CapsuleYOUR TASKLook carefully at the contents of the time capsule. Having savedthe file into the computer, some, like Mobipocket,support a sort of library management processfor you, aggregating the files in the way thatiTunes can achieve for MP3 files. This can be ahelpful solution to manage the ebooks you haveavailable, and can offer students the ability tochoose the title which may be appreciated.Changing the font size as well as the linespacing makes the text accessible for a verywide range of readers.Using ebooks on differentdevicesThere are a range of different devices nowavailable – some specifically to read ebooksand some that are more general purposetools – PDAs, and mobile phones in particular.These hand-held devices are particularlydesigned with the view to supportingreading on the move, and in that contextthey have a range of features that supportthat function. Perhaps the most importantconsideration is to do with the quality ofthe reading experience. It has long been feltthat reading documents on screen is notdesirable, and leads to tired eyes amongother things. Ebook readers have sought toavoid this problem through the use of a newtechnology, eInk. This technology offers amuch greater level of screen resolution thantraditional pixelated computer displays. It alsouses light differently, so the difficulties usershave in reading laptops in sunlight are avoided.Ebook readers – Sony and iLiad for examplecan hold a very significant library of books– 160 is a limit for Sony for example. This canhave a considerable benefit for an academicor businessman who needs to travel and alsohave access to their library of resources.As yet, there have been no real trials ofthe ebook readers with younger students,and their costs at somewhere between£200 and £400 make it unlikely that they willbe seen as viable in this context for sometime. Nevertheless, as a technology that isindicative of future developments it is stillworth considering what they might offeras a device. One of the biggest differencesbetween the Sony and the iLiad is the facilitythe iLiad offers to allow users to mark up thetext. As well as highlighting particular wordsor passages, the iLiad has a stylus whichenables you to fully annotate your books andalso to make notes on plain paper as well. Thismakes it a qualitatively different experiencefrom other readers. It also uses wifi to allowthe reader to constantly download RSSfeeds, allowing for access to newspapers orother rapidly changing news services. This isanother feature which currently may be morealigned to the needs of the businessman thanthe learner, though developments in mobilelearning might make this more valuable inthe future.One area in which an ebook reader mightbe particularly beneficial is for those partiallysighted students.
