Moving from ICT to Computer Science: Key Stages 3 – 5

Having started his career as a computer programmer, Mark Ward, teacher at St John Fisher Catholic Voluntary Academy, had long felt that his experience was under-utilised in his role as Head of ICT, Business and Vocational. Coupled with this, an Ofsted faculty review at the Academy in 2011 highlighted an issue with students’ engagement in ICT. In response, Mark went to his SLT to propose a new, more relevant and exciting computer science curriculum; it was the following day Michael Gove announced the demise of the ICT curriculum. Mark explains the process adopted over the following months.
