Wistaston Primary School – the journey to improvement
Wistaston Green Primary School in Crewe was eighth worst in the country five years ago. Behaviour was a particular problem with violence and swearing a common occurrence. Teachers were very unhappy and staff mobility was topping 200 per cent at one point. After being placed in ‘special measures’ by Ofsted, the school made some radical changes, including the introduction of Charlie Taylor’s behaviour checklist and using technology to monitor attendance, attainment and behaviour. The results have been astonishing and Michael Gove has even personally praised the school. The improvement is reflected in results with 94 per cent achieving Level 4 or above in English and maths - an increase of over 50 per cent from five years ago.
