 PE, School Sport and Club Links strategy

 

The previous government target was to increase the number of sporting opportunities for five to 16 year olds so that by 2008, 85 per cent of children experience a minimum of two hours high-quality PE and schools sport within and beyond the curriculum each week

In order to enable this, there are nine interlinked workstrands:

  •  Sports colleges
  • School sport partnerships
  • Professional development
  • Step into sport
  • Club links
  • Gifted and talented
  • Sporting playgrounds
  •  Swimming
  • The QCA's PE and School Sport Investigation

As part of the Physical Education and Sports Strategy for Young People  (launched 2008), the target now for 2012 is:

  • to build on the two hour core offer extending it to having opportunities to participate in a further three hours each week of sporting activity
  •  create opportunities for all 16 - 19 years olds to participate in three hours each week of sporting activities through their colleges or in local clubs

Funding has been committed :

  • to enable support for the network of Sports Colleges and School Sport Partnerships
  • providing more attractive sporting activities to increase continued pupil engagement on leaving school
  •  to train and develop PE teachers
  • to extend School Sport Partnerships into the FE sector
  • to identify and support gifted and talented athletes
  •  to upgrade facilities in targeted Sports Colleges
  • to provide more coaches for School Sport Partnerships
  • to recruit volunteer coaches, especially in areas of deprivation, so that young people have a wide range of role models
  •  to ensure that children can swim safely by the end of primary school
  •  for competition, to raise the quality and quantity of competitive school sport
  •  to establish a network of multi-skill clubs for disabled pupils
  • for Playing for Success, which uses sport to improve pupils' literacy and numeracy skills
  • supporting Community Sports Coaches and develop high quality coaching
  • increasing opportunities for young people in sports leadership and volunteering
  • to build better links between schools and community sports clubs.
