      string(4536) "41PE & Sport Today • Autumn 2006FeaturesSchools’ footballTheir opponents – ThomasTelford School – also recordeda massive win in the secondround (11-1 againstWolverhampton’s WednesfieldHigh School) and kept a cleansheet in all but one game priorto the quarter-final stage,including 4-0 and 6-0 victoriesin the fourth and fifth rounds.Certainly the final looksset to be anything but astalemate and with a hot sunbeating down the stage is setfor a glorious game offootball.Straight from the kick-offthis is assured with Parmiter’sscoring almost immediately butwith the keeper rounded andthe hard work done, the ball isstruck wide of the post.Soccer Special– the FinalPE&ST reports from the 2006final of the English Schools’Football Association Under 14’scup competition…It is a sun-drenched, Mayafternoon in the WestMidlands and after ninerounds of football two teamshave survived to battle it outfor the ultimate prize at theimpressive Molineux Stadium– home of the Coca ColaChampionship’sWolverhampton Wanderers.Neither side has had aneasy route to the final but onpaper Parmiter’s School fromWatford look the stronger,starting the competition with a10-0 victory in the first roundand a 12-0 win in the second.And despite scraping throughon penalties in round four andseven, Parmiter’s scored aminimum of four goals in alltheir other matches.42 PE & Sport Today • Autumn 2006Thomas Telford then applythe pressure, winning the firstcorner of the match and takingthe lead after just 10 minuteswith Jake Jervis striking a lowshot past Parmiter’sgoalkeeper. 1-0!Parmiter’s look to even thescore, heading into the sidenetting from a free kick on theedge of the penalty area but itis Thomas Telford who keepup the pressure with a strikethat goes just over the barand a second goal ruledoffside moments later.Although the teams lookevenly matched, the bestchances have been workedby Thomas Telford.Parmiter’s have enjoyed anequal share of thepossession but Telford, whohave a greater physicalpresence with some biggerlads, are defending well,demonstrating theirexcellent defensive recordin the qualifying stages.With 10 minutes left in thefirst half, Thomas Telford workthe ball wide to the right but agood cross is smothered byParmiter’s keeper.  At theother end, Parmiter’s arethrough but the ball ismiscontrolled and thedeflected shot falls safely tothe Telford goalie.With less than five minutesof the first half remaining,Parmiter’s bring on twosubstitutes – an inspireddecision as moments later theball bounces over the Telfordkeeper (who has been strayingfar off his line for most of thehalf) and Josh Towle nips inbehind him to even the score– Supersub makes it 1-1!Sadly for the ‘Parmy Army’the celebrations are shortlivedas a great Thomas Telfordmove ends with Samy Morsyrounding the keeper to retakethe lead in injury time – 2-1!At half-time, the teams stilllook evenly matched –Parmiter’s, however, seem toplay the more accomplishedfootball but it is Telford’s moredirect, route one approachthat has paid dividends so far.In the second halfParmiter’s step up a gear,keeping Thomas Telford underalmost constant pressure witha host of chances. CaptainTom Carroll is outstanding, asis defender Nathan Byrne.Sadly, chance after chance failsto even the score for asecond time – the ball goeswide of the goal, straight atthe keeper and players in thebox narrowly fail to connectwith crosses and free kicks.But it’s great football.Late in the second half, theParmy Army again goes close butthe shot is placed over the bar.And then it looks like it could allbe over as Telford’s Jake Jervislooks odds on to score only toslice it wide of the near post.Agonisingly for ThomasTelford but good news for on-top Parmiter’s, there will beseven minutes of injury time.The Parmy Army hasdominated the second half –sadly as yet to no fruition.Then, with only a minuteor so remaining Parmiter’s arethrough again, one on onewith the opposing keeper. Theshot is placed too close and itlooks like the last chance hasgone begging – the story ofthe second half for theWatford-based school.And there is one finalinsult in injury time: with justseconds left Thomas Telfordbreak and when Parmiter’skeeper saves from NathanRooney, that man Jake Jervispicks up the rebound andslots it home – 3-1!With just enough time torestart the game, thereferee blows the finalwhistle. Thomas Telford havedone it. Congratulations tothe ESFA Under 14 Cupwinners 2006."

However, Parmiter’s had the finalsay, with Stephan Williams restoring the three goal advantagewith a low shot to secure a 4-1 win.Final Score:Parmiter’s School (Watford) 4Ravens Wood School (Bromley) 1ESFA U14 Boys National Cup, 8thRoundThursday 16 March 2006 at Bognor Regis Town FCBognor Regis Community College (West Sussex) vParmiter’s School (Watford)The British seaside town did not disappoint with the weather –cold and windy! However, the pitch at Bognor Regis Town FCwas in excellent condition and provided a true playing surfaceconsidering the recent wet weather.The home team were quick to settle and would have takenthe lead had it not been for a world class save from TomChanning in the Parmiter’s goal. However, somewhat against therun of play, Parmiter’s grabbed the initiative with an own goal,which owed much to the swirling conditions. They thenextended their advantage with a powerful, well-directed headerby Jack Ashcroft. The score remained at 2-0 until half time.The second half saw Bognor pushing hard to get back intothe game, but this left them short in defence. With 10 minutesgone, Parmiter’s scored on the break with a smart finish fromHarrison Crawford to effectively kill the game off. However, thehighlight of the match was still to come, with Crawford pickingthe ball up in his own half, dribbling it across the field, past twodefenders and then unleashing a fierce left foot drive into thetop right hand corner of the net.Overall, despite their hesitant start, Parmiter’s deserved towin the game, although 4-0 was a little flattering.Final Score:Bognor Regis Community College (West Sussex) 0Parmiter’s School (Watford) 4"

The pitch has had the advantageof being rolled during the morning before the 2.15pm kick-offand is in excellent condition.A hard-fought cup-tie saw the home team concede goals inthe early minutes of each half. A scrappy early goal from MikeCollins for the visitors was equalized by a superb Curtis Daviesshot for the home team. Just after half-time, Max Mills, who hadan excellent game throughout, put Bognor Regis ahead. OllieRainer equalized with a superb effort 15 minutes from full-time.With just 5 minutes remaining on the watch of referee IanKellett from Shaftesbury, the visitors scored what proved to bethe winner, courtesy of Mike Collins. Corfe Hills still hadchances to draw level again but in the end it was Bognor Regiswho took a deserved place in the National Quarter-Finals. Theyrode their luck but kept hold of the ball for longer periods thantheir plucky Dorset opponents.Final Score:Corfe Hills School (Broadstone) 2Bognor Regis Community College (West Sussex) 3ESFA U14 Boys National Cup, 6th RoundFriday 27 January 2006Bognor Regis Community College (West Sussex) vWhitgift School (Croydon)The holders of the trophy set off for the South Coast in defenceof their title. As in the previous round Whitgift find themselves2-0 down at half-time after goals from the home team’s MaxMills (a tap-in) and a Mike Collins header.There must be something about the Whitgift half-timeteam talks from ex-pros Colin Pates and John Humphreybecause for the second match running Whitgift are a differentteam after the interval.  Gutteridge scores for the visitorsalmost immediately and they dominate the game. Against therun of play Max Mills hits a speculative 30-metre shot whichbends wickedly in the wind and hits the top corner for aspectacular goal. Trailing 3-1 Whitgift never throw in thetowel and Cascoe reduces the deficit with minutes remaining.Bognor just about hold on and the holders and Champions ofEngland in 2005 are out. Bognor Regis coach Tim Mayesconcedes that his team is somewhat fortunate to be in thenext round draw but that is often how knock-out cupfootball can go.Final Score:Bognor Regis Community College (West Sussex) 3Whitgift School (Croydon) 2ESFA U14 Boys National Cup"
