Managing by Numbers: the Way to Make Public Services Better?

The future of performance measurement regimes for public services, like Ofsted, is currently being re-thought in the UK, both in light of recent experience and with the advent of a new era of greater fiscal stress on public services. This briefing by the Economic and Social Research Council considers options for the future. One finding of the study is that the cost of running Ofsted is £207m per year – or 0.27% of Education spending, which is the cost of almost 5000 teachers. Leadership Briefings Issue 4.07 (43)
