Managing by Numbers: the Way to Make Public Services Better?

The future of performance measurement regimes for public services, like Ofsted, is currently being re-thought in the UK, both in light of recent experience and with the advent of a new era of greater fiscal stress on public services. This briefing by the Economic and Social Research Council considers options for the future.
