It can exist as a solid (ice), liquid (water) or a gas (water vapour). Begin thelesson by showing the class the photograph found opposite (page 51). This photograph shows Antarctica – a continent coveredin ice and surrounded by water. Some of the pupils may be aware that both the North and South Poles are melting (due tomany factors including the Greenhouse Effect). Reinforce the fact that when ice gets warmer it melts.But how can ice be made to melt more quickly? Establish that an ice cube will melt morequickly in a warmer place and ask the class how they could use this fact to find the warmestplace in the classroom. The class should plan the investigation before carrying it out,ensuring that all the test criteria remain constant (including the size of icecubes used). Once the ice has melted it becomes water again. Explainthat if a source of heat were continually applied to the water, itstemperature would get higher and higher until eventually it wouldevaporate. This can be demonstrated by boiling some water – althoughcare must be taken when demonstrating this in  the classroom.Extension: Water is not the only substance that evaporates into a gas.If you place a penny on some shaving foam, at first the penny will stayon top of the foam.       string(5613) "soccer ball. Buckminsterfullerene or so-called‘bucky balls’ is the roundest, most symmetrical large molecule known. The page opposite contains a representation of thismolecule. Bucky balls consist of 60 points on the surface of a spherical shape where the distancefrom any point to its nearest neighbouring three points on the sphere isidentical for all points. This molecule was a truly amazing discovery andwhilst an in-depth investigation of its properties and uses is farbeyond the scope of the primary curriculum, it can provide thebasis for a stimulating investigation into shapes. Themolecule is essentially a set of connected pentagons andhexagons (see picture opposite). The class should beginby investigating what a pentagon is and what ahexagon is and then draw some to establish theirunderstanding. Then using pentagons and hexagons,ask the class to create their own patterns or even sticklots of pentagons and hexagons together to make theirown version a the bucky ball. To help with this thedrawing on the right is a representation of the buckyball unfolded. Note that the surface consists of twelvepi-based pentagons, each one of which is connected tofive of the twenty hexagons.Extension: The mathematical name for the C60 bucky ball isthe truncated icosahedron. An icosahedron is the one of the fivePlatonic solids (3-D shapes whose faces are identical regular polygons).It has 20 faces, each one an equilateral triangle. The other four are thetetrahedron, the cube, the octahedron, and the dodecahedron. As an extensionactivity, ask the class to draw (or create) one of the other Platonic solids.Differentiation: This acivity is most suitable for more able pupils.43July/August 2005 Teaching & LearningBucky balls44 Teaching & Learning July/August 2005Numeracy Lesson 5: Sorting objects (Key Stages 1 and 2)Aims of the lesson: Place value, ordering and rounding (whole numbers): use symbols correctly, including lessthan (<) and more than (>).Activity: When studying materials as part of their science lessons, the pupils will be asked to sort objects according to theiruses or according to the properties of the materials used in their construction. However, for this lesson, the pupils shouldconcentrate on discovering numerical ways to categorise different objects. Begin the lesson by asking the pupils to think ofnumerical ways to sort a variety of objects in their classrooms. The objects could be anything including, chairs, books,glasses, pencil cases, bottles, paper clips and pens. How they objects are sorted is up to the pupils taking part in thisactivity. So, for example, objects could be sorted according to their weight, length, area orheight. Then ask the children to use symbols to make a sentence that corresponds totheir chosen criteria, such as: my chairweighs > (more than) my pen. The sentencescould also use pictures to represent theobjects. These pictures can be drawn or cutout of magazines.Extension: As anextension to thisactivity, the sentencesproduced by thechildren can betransferred tocomputer, clip art usedfor the objects and thefinished sentencesprinted out.Differentiation: This activity should be suitable for pupils of all abilities.Numeracy Lesson 6: Objective areas (Key Stage 1)Aims of the lesson: To measure and calculate the area of simple shapes using counting methods and standard units.Activity: The sheet opposite shows two objects (a pen and a crayon) drawn against a background of 1 cm squared graph paper.Begin by copying this page and distributing it to groups of pupils or individual pupils. Different objects will have differentareas and the aim of this activity is not (initially) to work out the real area of a real pen, but to use this task as a means ofdeveloping counting methods and the use of standard units. Explain that the standard units used to measure area are cm2and then point out that the objects shown on the handout have been drawn on cm2 paper. The pupils (inidividually or as agroup) should then count the number of squares covered by each object. When counting the number of squares, the pupilswill need to know what to do if the object covers only part of a square. Once the pupils have counted the squares, they shouldwrite the approximate area into the box provided next to each object. Once this activity has been completed, the class canthen turn their attention to real objects in the classroom. Pupils could be asked to draw pens, crayons, etc onto a piece ofpaper and then estimate the ‘real’ area. Then once the object has been measured, the estimate can be compared to the ‘real’measurement of area.Extension: As an extension activity, the class could estimate (and then measure) the area of some bigger objects in theclassroom. Bigger objects, such as chairs should be broken down into their components. So the class could work out the areaof each leg, then the area of the seat, then the area of the back etc and finally total all the component areas up to find theoverall area of the object.Differentiation: The initial activity relating to the sheet opposite should be suitable for pupils of all ability. The 10-question quiz covers content, skills and vocabulary from the lesson and with the online version, it is automatically scored and teachers receive a breakdown of the marks, showing where there are weaknesses in students’ understanding. The videos are divided into subjects, including all the core subjects as well as life skills, vocabulary and current events. The popular culture aspect is best represented in their weekly series ‘The week in rap’ in which the previous week’s current events are distilled into a summary video accompanied by a ‘Flocabulary’ rap. There is a version of this for KS 3 & 4 and one for the juniors, aimed at KS 2. The one drawback of this video series, however, is that it is written for an American audience so some of the terminology and current events items are less relevant to UK educators. Many of the videos are in the form of songs, raps or stories and they incorporate pop culture references, including James Bond, various sport themes, super heroes, fairy tales, and other topics that would be of interest to students. There are also accompanying detailed lesson plans, vocabulary cards, games, ‘read and respond’ prompts and a feature called ‘Lyric Lab’, which allows students to write their own rap lyrics based on the vocabulary from that week’s lesson. Flocabulary is a subscription-based service with individual teacher or institutional rates available.The Museum of Pop Culturewww.mopop.orgMOPOP in Seattle, Washington has dedicated itself to all things pop culture, and, like most museums, education is an important aspect of the work they do. They offer a variety of educational resources, including lesson plans, oral history interviews and teaching tips on iTunes University. The lesson plans are all free and, although they were developed to connect to exhibitions at the museum, they can be easily tailored to fit into a classroom and the information can be found on recordings and other media.  There are five lesson plans on the site. There is the ‘Anthropology of Punk’, which is an ethnographic study of how punk music forms a part of recent popular culture, particularly in relation to its evolution in the Pacific Northwest in the late 1980s and its popularity through Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. Geared toward students in KS 4-5, it introduces the concept of observing popular culture as an anthropological practice. Source materials include Kurt Cobain’s journals, Billboard and Rolling Stone magazine articles and Nirvana recordings. ‘Poet as songwriter, songwriter as poet: Cobain, Dylan, Shakespeare, and more’ is a lesson plan geared toward students from KS 3-5, focusing on areas of reading, communication and music. The plan looks at the development of poetry from Shakespeare to the Victorians through to modern times, using examples of how it has been connected to music in various times. The information is good, although the lesson activities are limited for this, leaving scope for more current or relevant material to be incorporated. For the ‘Battlestar Galactica’ lesson, students experiment with dramatic script reading and developing strategies for theatrical improvisation. For younger students, there are two lesson plans, one on the ‘Science of Sound’, which explores how students use their knowledge of science and energy to discover how sounds are generated and turned into musical forms. The other plan is on ‘Rhythmic Speech’ or rap and directs students to build vocabulary through musical exercises. These lesson plans are a great introduction to using pop culture as a mode of inquiry, especially for secondary students, and the oral history recordings on the site are an excellent resource for student projects and for looking at how to examine the lives of artists, musicians and filmmakers and their contributions to the world. "
