National children’s charity the Youth Sport Trust has cemented its partnership with Maths of the Day by collaborating to offer primary schools in the country access to free active maths workshops.

In a bid to upskill primary school teachers nationally, the charity and Maths of the Day (which provides online lesson plan resources) aspire to deliver 300 workshops with up to 4,000 teachers over the 2018/19 academic year.

Schools will be able to access Youth Sport Trust’s free Active Maths practitioner training, delivered by Maths of the Day to ensure the necessary support is provided for delivery and the opportunities of active learning inside the curriculum are realised by teachers.

Ali Oliver, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said:

“We are committed to driving improvements within the curriculum, and I am delighted to be continuing our work with Maths of the Day to achieve this through our free active maths workshops. We look forward to working with them to help schools across the country access cross-curricular opportunities to benefit academic success and increase physical activity and wellbeing in children.”

Maths of the Day, which has been praised by Ofsted for its innovative approach to combining Maths with fun and active physical activity, provides lesson plans and homework activities for teachers and parents on how to deliver the maths curriculum through physical activity. It aims to increase attainment and improve attitudes to Maths, while tackling inactivity in primary-aged children.

Founder and ex-primary teacher, Jon Smedley, has been working with schools up and down the country, introducing them to Maths of the Day and revolutionising the way it delivers both maths and physical education.

He said:

“At Maths of the Day, we are passionate about making the school day as active as possible and using physical activity to engage and enthuse children in their learning. We are delighted to be partnering with the Youth Sport Trust to try and engage and impact on as many young people as possible, and offering this free training is a big step forward in doing so.”
