First primary academy in the UK to host schools conference
Victoria Park Academy, based in Smethwick in the West Midlands, is preparing to break the mould later this year when it becomes the first Primary Academy in the UK to host a conference for Primary Schools.
The Standing Out conference, taking place on 5th July 2013 at West Bromwich Albion Football Club, will help show Primary Schools from across the UK how to use social enterprise as a way of giving children ‘real life’ skills and experiences. This national conference will see schools from across the country come together and in education terms will put West Bromwich on the map.
Working with the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO), Victoria Park Academy has an OFSTED rating of Outstanding and is a forward thinking primary school. It was the first primary school in the area to be awarded Academy status, and by hosting the conference it will show how embedding forward-thinking and innovative approaches into the school curriculum it has achieved excellence.
RIO is a social enterprise dedicated to improving the lives of children, working with schools to introduce social enterprise practices in the curriculum. As a highly regarded social enterprise based in South West England but operating at an international level, this unique collaboration is set to bring some key figures to the conference.
The conference will include workshops and seminars around leadership and creativity as well as motivational speeches from keynote speakers including European Business Speaker of the Year, Steve McDermott.
Andrew Morrish, Headteacher of Victoria Park Academy, is confident the event will be a success: “As a Primary school that's gone from special measures to outstanding in a few years, we know how difficult it is to transform a school, especially in challenging multicultural communities. Conferences like 'Standing Out' - with a strong focus on creativity and innovation - allow school leaders to learn from each other about what works best for their school to give them that leading edge.”
