New competition to inspire young scientists, innovators and engineers
Shell has launched a new national competition as part of the company’s long-term commitment to inspiring young people into careers in science and engineering.
The Bright Ideas Challenge is inviting pupils aged from 11 to 14 to devise creative solutions to energy challenges faced by future cities. With three out of four of us set to live in cities by 2050, it’s a challenge that is completely rooted in the real world that this generation will live in.
In order to win the grand prize of £5000 to supersize their school’s STEM lessons, pupils will need to push their ingenuity, problem solving skills and STEM expertise to the limit. Eleven regional winners will receive £1500 for their school, tickets to the Make the Future festival in London (see below), and tablets for each team member.
How to enter
Teams will take a trip into the future, using their problem solving skills and creative thinking to imagine innovative solutions to energy challenges faced by the cities of tomorrow. The competition draws on Shell’s well-respected Scenarios work, and comes complete with a step-by-step Teacher Toolkit, video resources and fun engineering warm-up activities to make it as easy and rewarding as possible for teachers to deliver.
Young people enter the challenge in teams of up to five. To have a chance at winning, they will have to submit a Bright Ideas Report and can further back up their idea with technical drawings, prototypes and up to three minutes of video.
