 Juggling with fire

“Leading sports Academy owns over 500 state of the art computers and laptops, a sports hall full to the brim of leading sporting technologies such as digital cameras, gymnastics equipment, rowing machines and a climbing wall. Abruptly struck by uncontrolled fire, the school is in ruins, its assets, ICT and non ICT, too.”

How do you recover from this? An astounding 1,300 schools across England and Wales are stuck by fire every year, resulting in huge insurance claims totalling in the region of £5.5 million a month.

Derbyshire based specialist school Sinfin Community School, witnessed this ill-fated experience. In 2006 the school campus was destroyed by raging fire.  Not only were the school’s 20 classrooms, two ICT rooms, staff room and library tragically burnt to the ground, but the entire supply of the school’s ICT facilities were destroyed too. The specialist engineering school was in ruins with an unimaginable £1 million worth of IT equipment damage.

In an attempt to recover from this disastrous day, the staff of Sinfin Community School spent endless amounts of time sieving through smoke and water damaged paper records. Laborious and sole destroying, it was however a necessary task if the school was to submit an insurance claim.

Sinfin Community School’s unlucky experience meant that the paper-based and spreadsheet reports were destroyed within seconds of the fire starting and the school was unable to provide an up-to-the-minute account of assets. Over 20 schools, on average, experience fire damage per week in the UK. This soaring figure proves how vulnerable schools are and their assets too. It is of utmost importance that schools have peace of mind that their estate is safely logged and recorded. It is then easier for schools to provide evidence and reports of the exact quantity, quality and location of assets owned.

In conjunction with schools and authorities from Southampton to Middlesbrough, Parago Software Ltd present Parago, a powerful Computer Discovery and Software Licence Management system for education. Designed to be easy to use, yet provide the flexibility and features demanded by high-end systems, the software focuses on the specific needs of schools, colleges and local authorities.

Many schools store information on their ICT and non ICT assets in a spreadsheet. This does not reflect an up to date status, particularly on installed software. Therefore, Parago automatically collects data and tracks changes via the internet across multiple locations into one school account. This is essential as schools are accountable for inappropriate and unlicensed software being installed on computers even when off site.
